Noss Mayo & Newton Ferrers

Noss Mayo and its twin village, Newton Ferrers sit on opposite sides of Newton creek in the River Yealm estuary.

Noss Mayo

Noss Mayo has two excellent pubs (The Ship Inn and The Swan Inn*), whilst Newton Ferrers has another good pub (The Dolphin Inn), a butchers (fine meat and home-made pasties to die for), a Post Office and general stores, a pharmacy, a Co-op, a tea shop and the Yealm Yacht club.

*Unfortunately, The Swan closed towards the end of 2008 but has recently re-opened with new owners and new decor.

The Dolphin Inn

Both villages have their own churches. At low tide it is possible to walk easily from one village to the other across the causeway known as the "voss". The local area has a number of interesting woodland and exposed coastal walks and there are some fantastic sandy beaches and fascinating rock pools to explore.

The Yealm estuary is a natural safe harbour that is a favoured port of call for many visiting yachtsmen. It also offers sheltered creeks and "secret" beaches that are ideal for "Swallows and Amazon" style exploring in small boats. For the most part, life in the twin villages is fairly quiet and peaceful although it does get distinctly lively during the annual regatta in August. This features swimming, rowing and sailing races of all kinds and a fantastic firework display on the final evening.
